soft cockpit

everytime i get up from a capsize and jump in to do a dry capsize, i have to be careful not to make any impacts on my cockpit, because a) i figure this is bad for any boat, and b) the sides of my cockpit are extremely soft(atleast compared to what i've felt on other boats). Should I be worried about this? It makes a foam cracking sound if i lightly press on the sides. Is it fixable? the rest of the hull is solid.

Thanks!

(i put in the random picture because i thought it was neat... jungle sailing :p. taken in Benicia, California, through binoculars)

A previous owner of my boat has placed a couple of strips of fibreglass lengthways along the sides of the cockpit over the top of the gelcoat. Its not pretty, but it seems to be fairly strong.

It might be a good idea to take it to a proffesional to take a look at cause it would really suck if you stuck your foot through the side of the cockpit.
