Patched from the inside

I hope someone can help me with my sunfish question. I just finished repairing a 6" hole in the bottom of my boat from the inside of the hull. Can I use Marine Tex to fill the hole on the bottom of the boat to get a smooth finish or continue layering with fiberglass from the outside.

If you used resin and glass cloth to bridge the hole you certainly can use MarineTex to finish the outside. Some folk prefer using a fairing compound if the layer will be really thin. But if it's the thickness of the hull materail you need to fill I'd recommend the MarineTex every time and that's what I've used several times myself even to using it to fill smaller (less than an inch or so) holes without any backer. The stuff is IMHO amazing. We repaired a lower unit on an outboard with about a four inch in diameter hole with only some window screen for backing and aluminum colored MarineTex and as far as I know the motor is still running strong and unless you look hard you can't see the patch.
