I've heard of people sitting on them and cracking them because they're hollow. Does this have any basis?

Yes, I did that with one of the Jr's a couple years ago - it was a lousy tack, I was tired, dog ate my homework etc...
Not a total loss though, you can sell the stubby end to an Opti sailor and recoup some of the loss...

It actually happened to a freind of mine at the start of a race. it has never happened to me and even if it did i would still buy another one. its kind of the price you pay for performance but it is worth it to me.
