What is considered the safe distance for mast step inspection port placement.
On this forum ive seen 12 inches or more as a safe distance from the mast step.
Do you actually need to do work on the mast step or are you just checking it to see if it is ok?
If you are just checking to see if it ok then you can put a port beside the cb and be able to bolt in your hiking strap etc and use a digital camera to photo the mast step and decide if its ok.
Iv'e had some laminate damaged at the bottom of the mast step on my new boat. It was repaired by the dealer with some marine-tex and it seems to be ok for the time being. I wanted to install the inspection port to keep an eye on the step and have storage on the boat.
I would consider a port by the c/b housing and use it to bolt in the hiking strap this way you can keep an eye on the step (with the aid of a digital camera)and not have to cut through the core of the deck.
Perhaps if Vtgent is around he could offer his advice??
