Mast in or out?

The person who sold me my boat said not to leave the mast if the boat will be in the water for a long period of time because the rocking of the boat will eventually cause the mast to "drill" through the hull.

Is that really so?

Not that I can imagine..., there is no load like when it's rigged and sailing and the plastic end cap protects the bottom of the mast tube.... you do have an end cap, right.

It will flop around and constantly tap away at the deck lip where it curls into the tube. Don't see why anyone would put the effort into wrapping up the sail and spars and not take the mast along too.

Probably the greatest danger is someone taking it to the recycle center for beer money. Just cost out the replacement value of anything you think you might want to leave out for the taking.
