laser filling up with water

Hi,

I am a newbie and have capsized a few times.
I have found that my laser has filled up with quite a bit of water.
Is this normal after a few capsizes.
Where does the water get in.
How do I find out....

There's lots of places it can get in - check around the seams where the deck and hull join - you can sometimes get separation at these joints.

If you only get a lot of water in the hull when you capsize or when you get a lot of water in the cockpit, the problem is probably in the cockpit, which means that you have a leak around the through hull drain. This is from too much movement of the cockpit sides and floor.

You might be able to slow up the flow by caulking around the drain, or by replacing what might be a plastic drain tube with the optional metal drain tube, but it is likely that you will still get leaks.

The real solution is to remove the drain, cut ports in the rear deck, glass the cockpit to the hull at the rear edge, and then grind out and reglass the drain location to make a nice thick piece of glass to drill a new drain through.

Not much fun, but better than sailing an 800 lb laser.

I think there are links to pictures somewhere in this site, try searching the forums.

Good luck
