Laser 2 Mast step support

I need to replace the wooden mast support under the deck of my old Laser 2. I mean the part that the mast step screws on to. Not sure what it's called. The old one has rotted away and no longer provides any support for the screws.

Does anyone know the dimensions of this item? Is it possible to buy a new one? Could I just fashion one myself from a block of oak or pine? Do I need to use marine ply? Are there any diagrams of the structure available anywhere? Any advice would be most welcome.
 
I just bought a Laser2 a couple months ago. The screws to hold my mast step were snapped off in the block of wood and I had to redrill 2 new hole locations. I don't know what it looks like inside. Here are some picts of what the boat looks like inside.

They do not show a wood piece inside but it has to be there. Sorry I can't be of more help.
