US SUNFISH CLASS WOULD HOST ITS FIRST JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2008

Fairhope, AL (June 21, 2007)- The International Sunfish Class Association (ISCA), advancing its new Strategic Planning program, has been developing a project to implement a Junior World Championship starting in 2008.

This championship was proposed by the US Sunfish Class Junior Coordinator
Richard Chapman (Libertyville, IL), who was assigned to lead the development
team. Other team members are Paul-Jon Patin (Forest Hills, NY) and Daniel
Feldman (Libertyville, IL).

The event is still pending approval by the ISCA World Council and the
International Sailing Federation (ISAF).

Tentative plans call for a fleet of up to 40 boats, potentially with an allocation of two entries per National Sunfish Class Association, with the US Sunfish Class receiving an additional six entries, and the host country receiving an additional one entry. Under the proposal, each National Sunfish Class Association will establish its own criteria for determining its entries for the championship. The first event would be hosted by the US Sunfish Class.

The US Sunfish Class Board of Directors established that sailors seeking selection as United States representatives will be required to submit a resume that shows evidence of participation, over the two year period prior the event, in the following categories: at least 25% of their yacht club’s races, two Sunfish regattas held anywhere in the US, and at least one Sunfish World Championship Qualifying event. If the sailor’s yacht club does not offer Sunfish racing, the sailor may petition to have this requirement waived.

For 2008, if a sailor cannot meet all these requirements, he or she may petition the US Sunfish Class Junior Coordinator to be accepted for entry into the regatta. If more resumes are submitted than available qualifying spots in the regatta, the resumes will be reviewed by US Sunfish Class representatives for selection. Weighted consideration will be given to those sailors who have participated in national and regional events, as well as their finishing positions in those events.

Notably, the 2007 Sunfish Junior North American Championship, slated for July
21-22, at Southold Yacht Club, Southold, New York, is the type of national caliber event that meets the participation requirement. Complete information on the event and the complete 2007 Regatta Schedule is available at
