John Skrzypiec came back from his heartbreaking loss at the New England Regional I in a final race shortened course drifter to easily win the New England Regional II by 1 point over Bill Brangiforte, winner of the first New England Regional. Drew Buttner was 3rd, after breaking his mast near the windward mark in the final race of the regatta.

Wequaquet Lake Yacht Club on Cape Cod hosted a great weekend for 53 and sailors and their families. There were 8 races in ideal conditions ranging from 5 – 18 knots. The staff at the yacht club treated us all with warm hospitality, and made sailing and hanging around the club truly enjoyable. You should all put this regatta on your calendars for next year.

Going into the last race, John and Drew were the only sailors that could mathematically win the regatta. With throwouts discarded, Drew was a point ahead of John. However, Drew was carrying a 12th for his throwout, while John had a 5th. Even with a win in the last race, Bill would end up a point behind John.

As the boats converged at the 1st mark, Bill and John rounded close in the top 5, with Drew back around 15th. Just before the mark, Drew’s mast broke in about 12 knots of wind. This sealed the victory for John. Bill went on to win the race to pull within a point of John, but the victory would go to John this time.
