Insurance???

Watching tv other day and commercial came on and advertised boat insurance.
I am in the process of getting a Sunfish and want to try to put together total cost. I know that you have to register a trailer if you have one and pay renewal each year. In NC you dont have to register a boat unless it has a motar.
Do you NEED insurance?? Is it recommended?? If the Sunfish only cost $800 i doubt that you would. What are the laws regarding it, do they vary by state?

I'm sure laws/rules/insurance standards might vary by state, but my insurance agent told me that my homeowners insurance would cover me. I didn't need a separate policy or an additional rider or anything. I'm in Michigan, for what that's worth.
