i have been sailng a laser for a year and i couldn't be happier, but the boat i used prior to a laser was a Club 420 and when gybing on the downwind, and if you had a good crew you barely need to turn to move the boom across. is there a way to do that in a laser or do i just need to turn to a broad or beam reach?

Sincerely

You will need to head down, roll the boat to windward, and sheet in. Thats putting it simply, best advice I can give you is to get out there and gybe as much as possible till you have it down.

The club 420 has a number of differences, the most important being that it can't go past 90 degrees, when it's out all the way it has a shroud deforming it, and it's curved because of the full-length batten. All of these factors make it more unstable downwind. The laser sail has a very stable flow downwind, and it's hard to un-stick and reverse it. Basically, like tim said, use the hull to turn it, sheet in, and make a smooth, wide ark.
