Batten Won't Fit

On one of my sails, the small batten will not fit in the pocket.

Should I fix the sail? If so, how? What is wrong with it?

Or should I just make a short batten?

Your top batten must be 400 MM in length. The minimum length for a legal batten pocket is 430 mm.

Your post makes a reader believe you think you own a Laser sail. I hope the sail in questrion was recently purchased new from an authorized laser parts dealer.

If the top batten pocket is not between 430 and 450 mm the sail is not a Laser sail.

If a legal length batten will not fit in the pocket, take the sail back and get a Laser sail.

Yes it's a genuine laser sail. I don't recall which manufacturer. I got it with
the used boat I bought. Returning it to a laser dealer is not an option.

My current usage is for practise and recreational use only. So a short batten
is an option.

I am more interested in learning whether the sail batten pocket can be
easily repaired.

Is it possible for something to happen with the elastic or fabric at the
end of the pocket to cause this?

Make sure you don't have an old endcap stuck in the inboard in of the pocket

Good point, I'll check for that. I haven't noticed any extra thickness there,
but I will check it out. Thanks.

Maybe it is time to measure the batten?? It may be that it is over length?

No matter why the thing does not fit...>Resewing the pocket seems like a lot of work compared to trimming some offthe batten.

The inboard end of the batten pocket is actually a pretty complicated piece of tailoring -- there's a little sling made of elastic in there, and it can get twisted around, or a batten end cap can get stuck in it. Any sailmaker can fix it for whatever their minimum charge is ($25 last time I brought one in after giving up on trying to fix it myself)

Thanks for the advice. I will be able to measure the sail and batten this weekend,
and I'll inspect the pocket for signs of a batten end.
