Well. i completed my first race and fall regatta yesterday, what a blast. The wind was
at 15-20 and there was mass carnage at the weather mark on more than one occasion, but i finished unscathed and at the middle of the pack. I think im in this for life.

Iv'e had some laminate damaged at the bottom of the mast step on my new boat. It was repaired by the dealer with some marine-tex and it seems to be ok for the time being. I wanted to install the inspection port to keep an eye on the step and have storage on the boat.
Good Morning Laserites
What is considered the safe distance for mast step inspection port placement.
On this forum ive seen 12 inches or more as a safe distance from the mast step.
Thanks
Here is the update...
I chose to work with another dealer in allentown who was responsive and interested in this issue. They feel that this is a minor issue of the lamanate seperating from the under layment mat. The repair was made using (Marine-Tex)
epoxy and they did a good job...
The missing gelcoat and related damage is located on the mast step hole wall where the bottom of the mast exerts load on the mast step wall facing the rear of the boat. It may or not be structural, this has yet to be determined. In my humble opion any damage created by normal loading on a "new...
That's worth a try, i'll give a shot, but i don't know if it will revele the damage taking
pictures down a 14inch hole. I will not allow the dealer to graft a new mast step on a new boat, that will take this to a different level.
I forgot to post this....
Upon futher inspection last night i also noticed that there is more damage to the bottom this mast hole. There are more cracks and an indentation of the gelcoat next to the largest area of missing gelcoat. I have a feeling that if and when the dealer looks at this...
Update....
I am still working with the dealer on this repair issue, so the outcome has yet to be resolved. As it appears it may take some time until the boat can even be looked at and the damage assessed. So far i am not impressed with the quality of workmanship or the dealer response with...
Here is the response from the Clews and Strawbridge dealer regarding the mast step issue...

Yes. the missing piece of gelcoat is from the wall of the mast step tube just above the bottom of the tube. When i look down i can see black where the gelcoat used to be, about 2in by one half inch. I filled the tube about half way with water , no leaks.
I have contacted the dealer yesterday...
At least 8 hours on the weekend, maby sneek 4-8 hours on weekdays after work. Marsh Creek state park PA is only 5 miles away. I will race with the local club this fall as ive had my boat just three months.
It's all i want to do......, i think ive turned into a junky!!!
I have a new boat #185449 with some gelcoat missing at the base of the mast step hole. I have sailed the boat about ten times and upon washing the boat today i noticed some gelcoat missing at the base of the mast hole. I bent a coat hanger to probe the damage and it appears that it is not a hole...
I have the same issue with the standard wheels. Launching isn't a problem, but recovering is a hassel. To get the boat back on the dolly you must get the yellow strap past the bow by either shoving the dolly under the boat or lifting the bow over the strap. Either method is a pain. I think it's...
Good Morning Everyone
I just bought a new 2006 laser pro three weeks ago and i am delighted so far. I sail
at Marsh Creek in SW PA and have joined the local sail club. Everyone i have met has
been very friendly and helpful. I don't have any questions about rigging the boat as i had to get...
