Thanks all, most excellent thoughts and photos. Two days until my wife and I test how many times we can accidentally jibe without suffering concussions or boom impalement.....:D John
Hello: Is there any generally agreed upon size that is preferable? Small (4") less intrusive, but can you get your hand/arm in near when needed for repairs? Large (6") more finger roomy, but noticeably larger. Or do most folks go with the 5" compromise size? My 1966 boat should be ready to...
Moeman: There are gelcoat repair kits available at any of your local sailing retailers.....on-line from our sponsor (APS), West Marine, and countless others. Do a search on the forum for gelcoat or scratch repair and you'll get all the "how to" specifics. John
I can't speak for the newer SF, however the old style wood tiller has a round rubber piece mounted on the underside just to prevent such scratching. The attachment screw is well recessed in the rubber. I doubt if those pieces are still available, mine was rotted after 40 years.....many useful...
Thanks Dan, the rumour stems from the fiberglass repair kit's instructions I'm afraid....it advises all the gelcoat sanding in order for the fiberglass webbing patch to overlap on all sides with the pre-existing fiberglass "core" (I'd guess that is what you might call it). Yes, it is holed...
The good news...the 1966 boat I bought last week only weights 158 pounds!
(My wife and I must be getting old, moving this thing feels like it is 200) The bad news.....previous owner dropped it in his trailer a punched a hole in the keel about 3/4 of the way aft. The hole is square and about 2...
Does anyone know the approximate price from a dealer for the bottom mast cap? Probably not worth trying to locate a "used" version of that piece. Thanks to this question I realized I need one also. John
Hopefully this will be the last of the naive questions about this 1966 boat...just doesn't seem to fit the posted diagram of the later versions!
The Sun Fish Sailors Files section shows the older boat to have a brass
drain hole to the starboard-front of the cockpit...what exactly should this...
Yes, circular metal cap with O ring underneath, it has with small ridges around the edge of it which made me think that it might be screwed in...for finger purchase. Thanks. John
Hopefully not an oft-repeated question....was the old style (such as in 1966) self bailer cap screwed in or simply pushed in as a plug? I don't think it has been removed on my boat for a couple of decades and I don't want to do ham fisted damage to it in removing it. Any one have any tips for...
Hello: That was fast, I just bought a well used 1966 Sunfish today-#31114
$455 which included delivery to my house (about 40 miles) one year old North sail, does needs some hull work and polishing up. I thought that was not too bad a deal. With all the original tackle being brass on this, was...
For a source, google "Store Locations West Marine", stick in your Zip and see if you have a store near you. You did not say where you live/ boat is located.
They reportedly have all the maintenance supplies you'll ever need. Ordering online available also. Just one I know of, you can always...
Hello: Not an owner at this stage, but seriously considering finding a used boat. I saw a couple of threads on transporting via pick up truck and it seemed everyone owned a Chevy S10.....is there any difference in what has to be done using a full sized (8 foot bed) Chevy? A cradle will need...
