Same thoughts here......I wanted to keep it off the deck to more easily enable car-topping without either scratching the roof of the car or having to remove the ratchet each time. I also hated to cut an inspection port if I didn't really have to. If need be I can move it later and put the hook...

So here is what I found out/did. It appears that the hook is held on with two 1" stainless steel wood screws! It felt like they were pretty tight as I backed them out and back in, so I am assuming some sort of non-metallic block is back there. I did NOT end up putting in an inspection...

My daughter (who is in the US Coast Guard) is stationed in northern Michigan and will be there for one summer then will move on. She'd like to sail (inexpensively) this summer, but will then leave for ports unknown! She likes laser size boats....doesn't plan to race or anything, just sail on...

Thanks.......and while we are at it.....it seems from some posts I have read, that the 1971 boat tends to crack, especially while trailering. I don't plan to travel much, but would like to occasionally take it a couple of hours away to a lake. Any truth to this cracking problem, and anyway...

I have looked through the forum and can't find a thread that addresses this. If I missed it, I apologize. I just inherited a nice, 1971 sunfish and trailer. Belonged to the sailing club. Everything in good shape including the hull and sails. It still has the old bronze tiller attachment...
