US Dominance

Looking through my Laser Handbook I note that the US has over 67000 lasers yet they hardly feature at an international level. Why is this?
Please don't mention athlete funding as in many of the countries that are successful, the sailors pay for everything themselves.

Most of those boats were sold to recreational users, not racers.
