NEWSFLASH - GUSTAVO LIMA POR NEW WORLD CHAMPION - Report to follow [Check back here for updates. Here is the update the ILCA sent TLF this Wednesday morning]

23rd September 2003 - Day Five

With only one race to go, the lead in the World Championship has changed for the first time since the championship started.

At the scheduled start time of noon the race committee postponed the start on the shore, finally at around 14.30 a light sea breeze started to fill in. However the start was further delayed when a large oil rig was leaving port and the harbour master shut the port. Sailors eventually left shore to commence racing at 15:30.

The Gold fleet’s race, which comprised 25 nations, began in a light 8 knot sea breeze. After two general recalls the fleet had a clean start, and yet again the fleet split distinctly between the left and right hand side of the first windward leg. Overnight leader Gustavo Lima POR, who was favouring the left, had a port starboard incident half way up the beat which resulted in him exonerating himself with a 720 degree turn. As the fleet closed on the top mark the group of ten boats rounded the first mark led by Anders Nyholm DEN, this group included second place overall, Robert Scheidt BRA, who rounded in seventh. Lima eventually rounded the top mark with only nine boats behind him.

After the downwind leg a small group of boats took advantage of a shift to the left to make a large gain and local sailor Luis Martinez ESP led to the top mark. Lima was also in this group. Martinez held his lead for victory ahead of Diego Romero ARG with Scheidt third. Lima continued to work his way through the fleet to eventually finish sixth to maintain a small lead in the overall points.

The second race commenced in a slightly softer breeze than the first race. Again Nyholm led to the top mark, which he rounded just ahead of Mate Arapov CRO. Scheidt rounded in seventh place with Lima further back in the fleet. Scheidt said: “After a disastrous start I had no option but to bang the right hand corner and fortunately there seemed to be a bit more pressure on that side and I managed to come in from way out on the lay line to round in a good position”.

Positions remained fairly static on the downwind legs, other than Daniel Birgmark SWE moving from third to first, with Lima eventually rounding six positions behind Scheidt’s third place. On the next beat Scheidt maintained a loose cover on Lima protecting the left hand side of the course; although he lost several positions himself he maintained a buffer of boats between himself and Lima.

On the second beat Birgmark SWE extended his lead and Phillippe Bergmans BEL moved through to second. These positions remained the same to the finish with Scheidt finishing third, 6 places ahead of Lima. Scheidt now holds a slender 2 point lead over Lima.

Tomorrow is the last day of racing with only one race to be sailed to decide the championship. Scheidt and Lima cannot be caught so an exciting finale is in store. Scheidt will no doubt be thinking about the last race in the Sydney Olympics when he missed out on his second gold medal after being sailed out of the last race. This time the boot is on the other foot as all Scheidt has to do is stay in front of Lima in the final race to gain an unprecedented 7th World title.

24th September 2003 - Day Six

With only 1 race to complete the World Championships, it was down to a
battle between Robert Scheidt BRA the overnight leader and Gustavo Lima POR
who was only two points behind. To win Lima had to finish fourth or better
with Scheidt behind. Like the Sydney Olympics the Laser class once again
provided drama and a nail biting climax with the championship being decided
in the last 300 metres to the finish.

The sailors were held on shore for an hour as a land breeze began to
develop and eventually freshened to 12-14 knots for the start. After one
general recall the fleet started successfully after Scheidt and Lima put on
a display of pre-start match racing manoeuvres. They continued this until 1
minute before the start when they both sailed up to find small holes 5
boats apart at the committee boat end of the line.

Coming off the line it became evident that Lima had a slight advantage in
boat speed and Scheidt eventually broke off a loose cover to allow Lima the
right hand side of the course while he worked the middle of the first leg..

At the first mark rounding Peter Santen SWE led from Mike Leigh CAN and
third place overall Michael Blackburn AUS. The leaders all came from the
right hand side of the beat. Lima could only manage to round in 22nd while
Scheidt was further back in 35th place. Both sailors made gains on the
downwind legs with Scheidt drawing almost level with Lima's transom as they
rounded the bottom gate.

On the second beat Lima sailed the shifts better than Scheidt. Staying to
the right of Scheidt he managed to increase his margin to 9 places as he
rounded in tenth place. Santen had held onto the lead and Diego Romero ARG
had sailed to second.

At the last mark rounding Santen led and Lima had fought his way to fifth
which was one place out of giving him victory on a tie break. However there
was one further twist in this fascinating race as the breeze dropped for 2
minutes and then swung 120 degrees as the sea breeze began to fill in on
the final short leg to the finish. Santen and Romero had enough of a lead
to hold their positions, however Lima sailed out to sea and picked up the
first puffs of the sea breeze to cross the line third to take his first
World Championship, beating Scheidt by 1 point. Blackburn held on to third
overall after a 13th place.

After the race Lima said he thought he had good boat speed as he has been
training very hard and sailing at the venue since 4th September. "After the
last beat when I rounded in tenth I thought it was possible for me to get
the positions I needed, so I concentrated on every wave and bit of
pressure, but I could only manage to round in fifth place. Just then the
wind dropped and every one tacked so I thought I must do something
different. A motor boat went past and I caught his wave for about 10m and
then tacked and got a little gust to cross third. I couldn't believe it - I
think God must have been on my side".
