Brown Stains on Side of Boat

I purchased a 14.2 this spring used. It is a 1992 and in great shape. After using it 4 times I am begining to see brown stains on the gel coat. They look like rust stains. It looks like the previous owner waxed the boat and did not get the wax off and something in the water is causing the stains to show up. How do I remove the stains?
I have tried light rubbing compound and lots of elbow grease to no avail. The boat does not even pass the 30 foot test.

West Marine sells a boat wash that removes such stains from fiberglass. Search fiberglass stain remove at westmarine.com.
