A different kind of tiller tamer

I can't imagine not having a tamer of some sort anymore. I single-hand 99% of the time and even during routine tacking it's much easier with a tamer. I rarely lock it down tight, but always have enough tension on it to hold a pretty steady course if I need to let go of the helm momentarily.

discovered an inexpensive ladder today and installed it!

That was a lobster float that I adapted, and it worked really well (tested and approved ;) ). Best part is it cost about $15.00 to make. I made a post about it at: Tightwad Bob - an affordable DIY mast float | SailingForums.com

A different kind of tiller tamer

I've never really been happy with my rope style tiller tamer so I came up with a new method recently. I was changing out the gas struts on the rear hatch of my 2000 Chev metro and thought Huummmmm. I haven't been able to try this out on the water yet, but sailing across the driveway it works...

Small outboard motors on Capri 14.2

Thanks Rick. I'll still get messages on this forum even after I sell the 14.2, so if I can be of any assist just hollar away. always glad to help a fellow sailor if I can. Two thumbs up for surviving.

Small outboard motors on Capri 14.2

Two bolts must be removed in order to remove the battery, but I'd only do that if I was replacing it, as it gets charged in the boat, etc. the battery is sealed and waterproof/spill-proof etc. zero maintenance. Or you could just buy my boat from me ;) . I purchased another boat two days ago to...

discovered an inexpensive ladder today and installed it!

Yes, the oak boards are inside the 2 halves of the hull where the bolts go through. it's a bit irregular in there so you may need to do some fitting. I keep the ladder in the up position for transport on the trailer only, as I hate to gamble on the velcro strap around the rungs holding the...

discovered an inexpensive ladder today and installed it!

I actually drilled new holes in the ladder brackets to mount mine (now has three per side). it's perhaps a bit of overkill, but I am 220 lb so I wanted it strong ;) . the eye straps on the upper two mounting bolts on each side are used to attach a bungie that goes around the ladder when...

    Halyards for the Capri 14.2

Pretty hard to set up a jib halyard wrong on one of these boats. up the mast to the jib block and back down again. mine is one piece, 31' of 5/16" double braid. I wouldn't mind if it was a foot longer, but 31' is what they call for on my model 1 (#53) also .

Small outboard motors on Capri 14.2

Kinda dark in my garage at the moment, but this should help. It uses the existing bolts that hold the rudder gudgeons on.

Have you had a chance to do the youtube? I'd love to see some footage.

Mast float on expo fiberglass mast

I'm not. my 14.2 is the std version. but would it be any different than installing a float on the aluminum mast? the DIY one I made looks like it would work well, and you wouldn't have to worry about the football style float being pointed straight into the wind if furled. ;)

Mast float on expo fiberglass mast

The fiberglass mast won't make a difference as far as the boat going turtle. sealed mast or not. imho EVERY dinghy, regardless of make or model, should have a mast float of some kind. The 14.2 is very beamy, and if you look at a photo of it wile on it's side in the water there's very little of...

    Whisker pole

One came with my boat, but I know what you're saying about the cost. WOW. the length should adjust to about the same as the length of the foot of your headsail, so how about an adjustable fiberglass shower curtain rod? they're tough, twist lock, and are available at any big box store for about...

    Shrouds and turnbuckle WLLs

two bad things happen at the location of the swage. there's a concentration of stress on the cable right at the edge of the swage crimp and each time the mast goes up or down works this area of the cable even more. the other problem is that moisture gets trapped in the swage area and can create...

    Shrouds and turnbuckle WLLs

I'm fairly certain you won't find a definitive anticipated load for the standing rigging anywhere for this boat, or any other. there's just too many potential variables involved. 3/32 is the stock size and has been quite adequate for this boat if it's in good condition. it seems like when you...

Small outboard motors on Capri 14.2

Although I find that with AGM batteries it's best to use a charger designed to charge AGM type batteries. they do last a lot longer, and worth it in the long run IMHO. batteries ain't cheep anymore  Russ

    83' 14.2 #53 resurrection

Sounds like good advise there Pirate. that swing keel weighs about 625 lb and could sure beat up a keel trunk if it wasn't restrained on a big day. our usual "local" lake is about 3500 acre, plenty deep but not generally too nasty, . we're really looking forward to nights out on the lake next...

    83' 14.2 #53 resurrection

Weeeeell…. just when the Capri is all spiffed up just the way we wanted it, with plenty of new attributes, a deal came along that I just couldn't pass up on a 25' Macgregor :) . Jennifer likes to travel and we both have loved sailing the 14.2 this summer, so we figure now we'll be able to travel...

Small outboard motors on Capri 14.2

I fabricated the battery bracket myself, out of 20 gauge sheet metal. I'm sure the 36lb motor would be great for the 14.2, but I've found the 30 is more than enough power for me. the 30 has 5 forward speeds and I generally use #4. if you look at the amp draw in each speed, it really goes up when...
