That's a cool and accurate-looking method. Not having a tree here, I balanced my Laser hull on its gunnel on top of my bathroom scale. I recall it was a bit heavier than 130 pounds, but I have added significant amount of fiberglass reinforcing within the hull.
Does anyone have one of these Intensity Powerhead Sails - in decent condition - that they would like to sell? Mine is now seven years old and getting beat. I use it often when Tomales Bay winds are too light for the standard. In light to medium air I think this is a brilliant sail.
Just a really nice Laser sailing day on Tomales Bay, CA, USA. I started out filming my friend's SCAMP, and then the wind piped up for perfect Laser (OK, ILCA) conditions.
Here's a photo of my inspection ports. They are standard marine items and after you cut the holes they attach with a series ring of little nuts and bolts. While I was in there, I also added fiberglass reinforcement around the centerboard trunk. Note from the photo, I don't race, either. My...
My boat has (I added them) two inspection ports beside the centerboard trunk. Going in through those, I was able to install stainless through-bolts for the hiking strap and mainsheet block.
Voila! Yesterday a bubble test revealed my leak was also at the rear of the centerboard slot, 2-3 inches above the bottom, and the hole was almost an inch long. We mixed up epoxy resin with microbeads thickener and were able to run a nice bead over it - and all along the rear slot. I'll be...
FYI to all - we had a success here today. As I suspected, the lead\k was found, through pressure bubble test, inside the centerboard case. It was on the aft side, down low about 3 inches from the hull bottom and it was big. Air and bubbles just blew through. We got it cleaned up and ran a...
I have a serious hull leak and it's not in the usual (hull/deck joint, cockpit bailer/hull interface) place that I can find. I think there's a thread that I can't locate which describes the technique for soap bubble testing?
I don't remember exactly.... Probably operator error in setting the hook, as I usually have plenty of vang on. What happened after it unhooked is of course the boom dropped off the gooseneck and I had to one-hand grab the foot of the sail about halfway and "become the boom and outhaul" in...
Has anyone ever experienced this hook "unhooking" while sailing? I did once and it was a real pain, out in stiff wind. Maybe I had an operator malfunction?
Hmm, now that I'm reminded, I think I'll try that again. I do have a Harken 433 hook on hand. I quit using it years ago after it came unhooked once while I was out on the water. Must've been operator error! Not only leech tension, but I like all the other tension my Laser provides me.
Hi, Lali, and forgive my 74 year old memory - I now recall we did discuss this before. If I wanted to fiddle with it more I think I could get the clew down more, but - just curious, is that going to be better shape or performance, or maybe just aesthetics?
I agree that McLube is a great help for all friction points on the Laser. Here is my main solution, though. Beadwork.... I know this is not legal but I don't race.
