I have owned my sunfish for about 12 years now and i want to try to race now. The problem is i don't know where to start. I looked over the rules and equipment and i'm ok with that. The issue is do i have to have a membership to the USSCA or ISCA? Also am i allowed to show up to an event and race? I currently live in Long island, NY and i know the are some events coming up. Lets face it I'm 29 years old and not getting any younger so i want to have some fun doing somthing i love!
Thanks for any info

The best thing would be to join some group that races Sunfish regularly. This doesn't have to be a (fancy) club; it could be a group of people enjoying some informal weekly racing. And BTW, almost all welcome newcomers enthusiastically.

You don't have to be a member of any organization unless you race in a Sunfish Regional Championship and/or National event. That shouldn't hold you back because, typically, you can join on the day of the event. You can find a Sunfish racing schedule on line at the Sunfishclass.com site.

Racing will teach you the more subtle aspects of sailing your Sunfish and it will keep your mind sharp as well. But that is more of an issue with an old guy like me.

Of course, for many the social aspects of getting together with fellow sailors are important as well.

thanks for the reply! There is just two more things such as a sail number. Do i have to have one to compete at an event? I notice on the sched. there is a race in Amityville, Ny by me at a private club, will i be able to compete? Thanks:D

Depends on the club!
The fleet I am registered to does not require sail numbers. But we are a small fleet.
Last year our fleet held a midwest regatta and the sail numbers on the sail were not required but a sail number was required to race and all you had to do was show your sail number ID card at sign in.

But that is our fleet and your results may differ. Best to try to contact the club hosting the race unless it isn't very far away from you.

I agree with Offramp that you need to contact the club and find out.

Once you decide that you like racing, you should consider becoming a member of the Sunfish class. Their office is in charge of the sail number system.

PS: Some people make up their own number and I have even seen a few sails without any number in 'club' races. Clearly, that can lead to confusion at the finish line  .
