Cunningham cleat pulled out

 My cunningham cleat has pulled out of the deck. The wood around it is pretty soft.Would it be best to put a other piece of wood underneath it and through bolt it or is there a better way. I am still using the original line set up.I do have access through inspection portsto do this.

Your best bet would be to replace the wood, because if you keep drilling into soft wood it will keep pulling out. I think they sell the pieces of wood on APS. You might want to check there for it, I don't know how they attach the wood so I can't help you out with that part.

Hi,

That must be a 70's boat to have wood. I have no idea when they changed but most don't have it.

I'd thru bolt, with nuts and washers, and some silicone or 5200. Then, before you put it away next Fall, i'd remove it, dremel around a bit, leave it open all Winter to dry. in the Spring, I'd dremel some more, tape underneath, fill the hole with WEST epoxy, redrill, reseat, and put nuts and washers back on. (If you live in one of those places without Winter, then use a light bulb to accelerate drying).

I'd also suspect all the other wood as being wet/rotten, and thus read a lot of threads on here. That's just a warning sign.....

Thanks Al and Tim. The boat is a '77.I live in one of those places with winter. So far that is the only place that I have found, but the season has just began.

Make sure you seal it well with 4200 (5200 is even better but it is permanent, so if you think you'll have to remove it one day, don't use it). Check all your other hardware that have screws going through the figerglass. I just finished restoring my 79 Laser and most of the original silicon used to seal was long gone and that always leads to wet core (like you have).

Thanks Annie.I re-did all of the hardware with 4200 before I started this year everything else is tight and OK.
