Jib Halyard

Hello,
I have a Mod1 and I am getting it ready to sail after many years in storage. I was wondering if the jib halyard is configured in a normal way(i.e. shackle, line goes thru block on mast then down to the clam cleat on the mast) or is there a different configuration?

On my boat, the previous owner had some kind of block in between (which has deteriorated) and I can't figure this out.

Thanks.

Tubaguy,

Yes, the free end of the jib halyard goes through the clam cleat, and is then fastened to a small horn cleat a little lower on the mast.

I found that the small block (up by the forestay) was too close to the mast; the jib halyard would pinch against the mast and not run freely. My solution was to hold the eye strap (to which the block is attached) away from the mast with stainless steel nuts and washers. That has seemed to work.

Another modification was to rig a jib downhaul, which runs from the base of the mast, through a small block attached at the bow, and up the forestay. It makes dowsing the jib much easier, faster, and safer.

I recommend Annapolis Performance Sailing as a source for blocks and hardware. They have a good web site.

My 14.2 is a Mod 1 also, built in '84 I think.

Hope this helps,

Greg
