I am in the repair industry and from experience Awlgrip is not the way to go. It is a very soft paint. I would stay to the original gelcoat. It is very easy to scratch awlgrip and if not done right it looks like crap.

By the looks of your picture you need a mast step repair kit. I work with Fibreglass. I make mast step repair kits.
