What are the differences between a Standard Laser and a Laser Pro? Are these two boat raced as one class or two seperate classes?

There is only one class of Laser, it is a Laser, a Laser is a Laser is a Laser... The "Pro" rig is a marketing concept created by the manufacturer in order to "upsell" the new Vang, Cunningham, and Outhaul systems (3+ years ago so not so new anymore). If you are buying a boat advertised as a "Pro" rig it basically has the new systems on it, if not a "Pro" it basically has the good ole 30+ year old vang system with loops and knots in the Cunningham and Outhaul. I would suspect within the next few years all new boats will come out with the "Pro" system and there will not be any other option. And to answer your question they are all raced together...

I did not know that there are still new boats produced without the new rigging. I assume there is a difference in price?

2006 Laser $4,780
2006 Laser Pro $4,995
2006 Laser Radial $4,780
2006 Laser Radial Pro $4,995
2006 Laser 4.7 $4,565
2006 Laser 4.7 Pro $4,790

So, the vang is free if we assume the outhaul and cunningham upgrade costs a bit over $200.
Thanks for listing the prices!

if your looking to get a new boat the pro rig will save you alot of pain and if you are racing it is a really good idea to have it.

I heard an old story, years before the upgrade, that one builder tried to bring out a higher-cost Laser that was "optimized for racing". Doesn't sound too one-design, does it? According to the story, Bruce Kirby sued and got it stopped.
