Rudder hanger/Gudgeon LASER 1

Hi all,
Just bought a new rudder gudgeon as mine was knocked off in a freak traffic accident, the nice man in the shop assured me the new plastic one is interchangeable with my old chrome one, which looked like it would, but it wouldn't, the holes are in different places, so I need an older type, second-hand one I guess.... and getting to the point... anyone know of a secondhand source over here in the UK? or has anyone got one for sale, not bothered about condition!

You may have some trouble locating one of the stainless steel gudgeons. I believe they were made by a log gone company called Custom Fittings Canada that supplied for the original Sailcraft of Canada. Both of these companies are gone. Ever since the early 80's and perhaps even before that the switch was made to the pastic version. Although they are a ware item they are better than the matal.

I have also run into the problem of having to replace the metal ones with plastic and did so with out problems. You have to remove the old one and repair the holes with epoxy. Redrill and seal before installing the new. failing that you could look on ebay for a long time and you might find a person selling a dead laser off one parts at a time.

I also found that I had to replace both as they were of differing length. The rudder was further out from the transom with the new gudgeons by about 1/8 th in.

For what its worth

Aaah! thanks for that answer, extremely useful, looks like I'll should get another plastic gudgeon and just get on with it!

Yes, it is not that diffucult to repair and you don't have to worry too much about the aesthetics of the repair as it will be hidden (at least I think so) behind the new gudgeons. Make sure the repair is flat, though. I think you could just fill the wholes with marine tex or something like it, although epoxy will be stronger.
Good luck!
