Hello...A few parts questions

I have recently aquired two lasers without mainsails, daggerboards or rudders and I have questions.

Is Laser still a viable company (I can't seem to find a website)?

Could anyone reccomend the best way to find these parts (used is good) on the east coast.

Thanks in advance, I am glad to be on this list.

Re: Hello

Any idea what happened w/the orig sails, rudders, dagger boards? I'm guessing there are no control lines either. Seems strange someone would have just hulls and spars sitting around unless they were abandoned boats.

Lasers are not manufacted by "Laser" but actually by a company called Vanguard. You can find their website at www.teamvanguard.com. However, you have to buy new parts and boats through an authorized dealer. WestCoastSailing.net, the title sponsor of this forum, sells many of the parts you are looking for. You may also be able to find the same parts used but in good condition in the For Sale section of this site or other classified ads websites.

Good Luck.

Thanks for your replies!

I think it does seem odd to find these boats without any of the gear. A friend has access to some kind of federal surplus sale and was interested in the trailers (not the boats) but they came only as a package deal. He new I sailed and asked if I wanted them.

I haven't sailed a laser since I was a kid but I can't wait to get back in one!

Thanks again,

Will

Keep an eye on the ebay sight and also put notices up in marina / yatch club boards and you can collect the stuff you need at a resonable price. To get an idea of how old the hulls are take down the SN's found on the transom and people on this forum can certainly tell you the age. It may me be that to buy all the stuff you need you might be well advised to just look at buying a real beater and junking the hull.

Best of luck

OLd boats without parts?? Be really careful with your funds.

The boats may be so hammered they are not worth fixing. ( soft decks are great indicators and you can find lots of information elsewhere on this list about "when the trash is the right place for old fiberglass)

The purchase price of parts may exceed the value of the finished total boat. Don't let the bargain price of the bare hulls throw you off. You may be able to get a cheap functional boat for a lot less money and effort than you can find the parts for a bare hull.

Practicing what I preach>

Last fall I set four old Lasers out in front of my shop with "FREE to GOOD HOME" written on the hulls. I have a boat shop and all the tools ans skills necessary to rebuild Lasers. I also realized these boats were beyond any hope.
I kept five others which I plan to fix up and sell or just loan out.

The boats each diasappeared within an hour. I hope they are being used as flowerbeds and not being used to empty wallets for no real gain.

Summary: Do not be sentimental. Junk is junk. An old useless hunk of p;lastic is just that. SAomebody already decided to put the boats up for auction. Beware!! That person may know what junk is and may be trying to rid himself of it!!!

The trailers probably need no more than new lights, bearings, grease, tires and wood. THAT you can accomplish for under the value of the finished product.

Your friend may be stripping the deal of its "deal."

Bre careful!!

But do get a laser and come play with us!!!

Please see my new thread "If I had an old Laser I'd" down in the Open Discussion section and post these great comments there.
