training

 Any info on training centers specific to laser in US. Have found a couple, but web sites don't give a lot of info re:programs (eg:who they are geared to). Some are geared to prepping for a specific regatta. But if one isn't part of a fleet or club, how does one get basic training (I've raced a lot but not a laser.)

Any help, links, etc. would be appreciated.

It would be worthwhile to seek out a club with a Laser Fleet or at least some Laser sailors. I've gotten a lot of help from the sailors at my club. I tried racing against a couple of the women at the local level, and I was so bad that one of them turned back from the starting line and coached me throughout the race. That happened for several weeks until I started keeping up. I've also been invited to train with the junior racers last year and the coming year. I can't say enough about the helping spirit at my club.

If that just isn't possible, you can also do some self coaching with books, CDs and rigging guides. Those are listed here and you can find them with the search feature.

Another idea, if you're going to spend money anyway, is to find a local prodigy and pay for a few weeks of coaching.

Gee Whiz Sailor,
Ya never ask a lady her age, by doing so you give away your own. She'll tell ya on her own terms if she deems it pertinent to the conversation. Merrily's got class (Laser class anyways) and a darn fine administrator :).

Fishingmickey, thanks for the very nice compliments, but I think Sailor237 was asking mmandell's age. If you look at his profile, you'll see that his name is Neal--usually a guy's name.

P.S. Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah and Kwanza too!

I appreciate all of your input. I have all the books, CD's (except "Whisperer"), and built a hiking bench. (By the way, Rick White's site is confusing and I don't think he does a specific laser Clinic.) There are some fleets on the Connecticut shore that I will look into for next season, though I wish I could train with somone before that. I don't mind paying for coaching time. I 've even tried some of the university programs in the north east, and they don't return my calls. As to my age, I guess I qualify as a grand master.

Where about in CT are you ? There are a couple of active fleets that Frostbite - Cedar Point in Westport is the largest with 50-60 boats - a few of the guys there will coach if asked.

I know of Cedar Point, but feel need some coaching before attempting to race there. (Their web site makes it look pretty intense.) I will call to inquire if someone there is willing to coach. Thanks.

Rick White has 2 (TWO) Laser seminars for 2006 and the first one is just abut a week away!! Don't get confused by the Sunfish part, there may be a couple of them but it's mostly Laser. I have been to Rick's once and it was great with Kurt Talbee & Meka Aiken of Sailfit providing a lot of the on water coaching and feedback when Kurt was in his Olympic campaign. I haven't been to Kurt's seminars but would expect them to be great. Both advertise in the Laser sailor. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND lots of fitness training before going to the week long seminar because the wind blows in Florida that time of the year and you are on (and in) the (WARM!!) water all day long save for lunch breaks. In Laser Sailor there's also advertised a company in Dominican Republic doing Laser training. Don't know anything about them. You might contact Peter Seidenberg from the Newport RI area. He won 2nd in the Laser Worlds in Brazil, has retired from running Seitech dolly and might be available for coaching/training. I think I overheard him talking about going to the Domincan Republic this winter. VERY VERY knowledge and talented Laser Sailor and a soft spoken GREAT GUY. I have his email address if you want it.

Apr 16-21 -- 5-day Rick White Sailing Seminar for Laser, Sunfish, dinghy, Key Largo, FL, 305-451-3287, [email protected] and see www.sailingseminars.com

Thanks for the info. Sure, I'd appreciate Peter Seidenberg's email. Newport is a little far from me, but maybe he has some recommendations either to meet or someone closer (New London/Groton, CT area)

We have been to the Rick White seminars twice (both times with Kurt and Meka Taulbee as guest instructors), and have also trained with Kurt at Clearwater. We got a lot out of the Rick White seminars; plenty of on-water drills and practice races. Our group had sailors of all skill levels and my observation was that everyone learned a lot. Kurt did a great job providing individual coaching, encouragement, and feedback. You need to be ready for five long days on the water, there was some attrittion towards the end :)

We spent three days training with Kurt in Clearwater last spring; it was the best investment in sailing I've made. Highlight was a 10 mile downwind sail off the coast in 12-15kt breeze and big waves.

Mr Seidenberg is a member of the Forum. Go to his profile to e-mail him. He is "dollymeister." ...

I guess, Mr. Seidenberg is one of the best Laserites, we have in our days:
Here some highlights of him, taken out of the 2005 ILCA-Handbook
2005: Masters Worlds,GGM: 2nd
2004,2003: Masters Worlds,GGM: 1st
1997, 1995, 1994: Masters Worlds,GM: 2th
1996: Masters Worlds,GM: 4th
1991, 1990 Masters Worlds,M: 2nd
etc., etc. etc.

It would be a dream for me, to go to this training-camp for Laserites:

Until I have not that money to travel to Cabarete, I'll go here: Lake Constance, between GER and SUI, the date of 2006 may be the nearly same like in 2005:

"Good sailing into 2006" to all of you out there!

Hey Mike ( Halibut)- good to hear from you! Other forum readers, TAKE NOTE - if Mike and his wife show up at a sailing seminar with Mike in his Sunfish and she in her Laser, watch out! When I was at Rick White's seminar, he and Kurt were going hard at it - Kurt in the Laser, Mike in his Sunfish, and the rest of us in Lasers watching their transoms. What a great time we wannabees had watching those 2 on the last day showing us how much more there was left for us to learn! The thing I can add about Rick White's is that it is a WHOLE LOT OF FUN. You can leave your macho b.s. in the cold north and bragging rights on the beach, primarily older sailors (30+) who are there to have fun AND learn
