It just happened yesterday. My wife got into my van and said, "It's pretty ripe in hear!". I had left my wet hiking boots in there from Saturday sailing and it has been kinda cool so they stayed wet.

It doesn't seem to bother me as much. That wet gear smell reminds me....................of victory. :D

In the other category:

An oily fish or two tossed inside the hull of an especially "cherished" fellow sailor at the end of a regatta followed up by a nice cross country trip on I-10 to bake it in leaves a lasting impression, er smell.

Evenings, aft return to the base-port, the small bottle of Dutch Grolsh-beer that was stored in my tiny canoe-ton in the cockpit and got rather long warm in the summer-sun during a hard day of cruising around in good winds and was not possible to drink it during the day....;)
Cheers

P.S.: Next summer, I take a rope around that bottle and pull the bottle behind aft the transomin the cool water ... Maybe then, I'm not any longer the fastest cruising-Laserite at the channels of northern Netherlands..

WET BOOTS. oh MAN the funk they create is ridiculous.

I just ordered some of those boot heaters from amazon.com.

honestly though, boots and wet gear in a semi warm car for two days is something awful :(

Hey... everyone needs to give congrats to Gobernail for winning the Wursfest Regatta!!!! Really folks... it was a tough crowd with gust over 30. Fred is not a young pup with the perfect body either. It was inspiring to me. Guess he smelled something after that. Toooo bad so sad.

Thanks again Fred for talking with me about fliberglass and filler stuff for the US1. Probably the worst smell and feel is fiberglass. I hate all about fiberglass. Not sure how you deal with it as a profession.

Hi Folks,
It's kinda of a toss up for me... My harken sailing gloves acquire a a particular raunchy smell and of course anything neoprene that hasn't been rinsed and dried out properly, Hiking boots, etc, etc, etc.....

Definately wet well used neoprene zip boots....but I found a cure stuff called MiraZyme from McNett Company....it really really works on all nasty neoprene stuff...you can buy it through Hobie Dealers or check www.mcnett.com

Anything that's been dipped in Galveston Bay, espcially if it's let to slow-dry bundled up in a wet towel in Houston's humidity, becomes really really oderific.

There's a lotta different solvents with a lotta different smells and a lotta different toxicity levels, but in my opinion styrene (which is the predominant smell in polyester resin and gelcoat) is the one that really smells like it's doing something bad to you. One whiff of it makes my liver hurt; I bought a nice respirator even for the occasional hobbyist-type repair.

that's good, those off-gassing chemicals are BAD for you.

Warning labels talk about NERVOUS SYSTEM DAMAGE.

that's not good for business.

------
laid up boats this summer, and had the full respirator kit on ALWAYS.

That said, a new laser fresh off the truck, pull the drain plug: smells GOOD

haha, you were twitching when you wrote that too right?

----
seriously though, a lot of those chemicals are HIGHLY hazardous.

still think a new boat SMELLS GOOD, but some get sick?

old stinky boots are still the worst. my lord do they reeeeek

I agree that hiking boots are really really bad smelling, but I had to vote 'other'. One time I found a baby bottle half full of milk that had rolled under the seat of the car and then sat in the 100F sun for a week with the windows closed. I never did get all of the smell out of that car. ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.....

Cigarette smoke and powerboat fumes were inserted in the poll because I wondered if anyone else shared my irritation .

Apparently, I am not the only one who has been bothered.

The folks driving power boats parked at the weather mark would certainly not deliberately annoy the sailors. For the most part the occupants of those boats are our friends and family who are there to lend support.

Perhaps we should make an effort to explain how easily our friends in the gallery could improve our experience by paying attention to the exhaust fumes from both the boats and their recreational drugs? I will do my best to remember to inform our friends and request their help.
