With so many boats (more than 150), the sailors were split into three fleets (blue, yellow, etc) for the first eight races. The sailors rotate so that one competes with different people in these qualifying rounds. Based on the results after these eight qualifying races, a split is made into three groups of about fifty each, gold, silver and bronze. From then on, the gold sailors compete for the first fifty spots, etc. The tape on the mast is related to the group that one is in to prevent confusion on the course.
