Wood block or backing plate necessary for mainsheet block eyestrap

I just installed a Harken 009 ratchet block on the deck lip over the cockpit. When I purchased the block the salesperson looked at the eyestrap of a brand new Sunfish and noticed it did not have any backing plate or block. So he said I probably wouldn't need one unless I planned to do some extremely hard sailing.
However, just to be on the safe side, I installed two very large washers before putting on the lock nuts. Does anyone think a block is absolutely necessary for the eyestrap?

You should have some backing on the strap. The washers should be enough. I did the same after I saw that Windline was selling the washers with the installation kit. I've had no problem with hard sailing.
