LooserLu tried posting this, but had some trouble, so I'm giving it a whirl on his behalf.

Hi,
The Games are running, best time to make a thread about it.

I reminded a movie about professional athletes, that belong to disciplines
of the Summer-Games, that missed to get the ticket for the Olympic Event in
that summer. In 1987 some athletes (from the disciplines of running) from
the nation Jamaica didn't got the ticket for the Summer Games and decided to
join the Olympic-Wintergames of 1988 in Calgary/CAN in the bobsleigh
discipline.
The rest is history and well told in a famous movie ("Cool Runnings") - "Jah
man"... ;)

Looking to the Olympic disciplines for our dinghy, only one Laserite per
discipline and nation is allowed to start at the Olympic Sailing-races.
So, a situation, like with that Jamaicans, perhaps can be interesting for
this or that pro-sailing Laserite, that in 150-% desires to join the
Olympics -
F.e.: Of the fellows (and in future: ladies, too), that get the second place
in the ranking of the Olympic-trials for the Games...

To bring my first and my second thoughts together: In your Opinion, which
would be the best discipline for the Olympic Wintergames for a Laserite?

Short track is more like a 49er, Speed skating is more like Lasering.

Skill, fitness, concentration, your legs burn, and it's only about who gets there first, not style points!

Well folks here's my thoughts,
For toughness and attitude to match a Laser sailor, I think Hockey fits that bill perfectly. Throw in the BIG hill ski jump combined with the downhill for plane-ing runs in those 30-40 knot downwind legs, freestyle jumping for practing your ejection on the death roll, short track speed skating for those tight mark roundings, Salom skiing for developing the agility and timing to make perfect roll tacks and optimium boat handling skills and mogols for wave dodging upwind legs.

Hi,
Thanks Merrily for helping me to make this. Unfortunately, my account at TLF not offers me the possibility to create a thread that includes a poll.

Update to "Cool Runnings":
In the beginning of this week, for Jamaica a dream became true. One of the (four) members of the famous former Jamaican Bobsleigh-team, Lascelles Brown, won a silvermedal in 2-person-Bobsleigh! He started together with Pierre Lueders for Canada.
To remind: Jamaica still holds the record in the startingsequence-time (4,78 sec) at 4-person-Bobsleigh!
Here is a link to a Website that reports about this. Sorry, it is all in German-Language, but I'm sure, someone may find a website of this in English.

My favourite wintersport, in relationship to the aspect of this thread, is: 1-person-luge. The athelte "battles" with a strong-"one desin"-hard-watersport-vehicle and has a position on it, that strong remembers to hiking out in the Laser on a reach in heavy air... Our German Luge-pro "Hackl-Schorsch" (Georg Hackl) is a hero here in GER in that sport and his body remembers strong to a pro-Laserite for Radial-Laser.

Cheers
LooserLu
