Which drain plug?

I am a Laser newbie (got a Laser, my first boat, for Christmas, at age 56) and found out the hard way that my very old Laser did not have a drain plug in the stern. For Lasers that are more than 20 years old, will the current drain plugs on the market fit my old Laser? Thanks.:)

There are at least two kinds of plugs. Describe the shape of the hole in the transom, and someone will tell you which plug you need.

Simplest solution?? Spend five bucks and buy a brand new assembly...or go $10 and have a spare.

The current drain plugs are mounted in a 1" dia hole - the older ones used a 7/8" dia hole. It's very easy to enlarge the smaller hole if you want to use one of the current plugs.

If you look at this page, you'll see the various flavors used. http://www.apsltd.com/Tree/d90000/e88560.asp

Actually, it is easy to enlarge the hole if you have the right drill bit. Do not use a paddle style wood bit, yes it will be cheap, but it will make a mess of the fiberglass. Get a regular bit of the right size. I have found the Beckson plug, which I believe is the current standard and sold at various boat supply stores is really 15/16". The only place I could find a 15/16" regular bit was at Northern Tool for about $20. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200307698_200307698 However, it works perfectly.

I would replace the old plug as the seal is probably shot anyhow and you will want easily purchased spares.

Thanks everyone. I got a new assembly and replacement plugs and I will see what works. Thanks for the help.
