restoring an old boat that had been painted once ... using vc teflon for bottom and poly for topsides ...does anyone have a template, or dimensions for standard waterline on a laser - i'd like to mimic the white bottom /color topsides of a new vanguard boat

Don't know where you'd get a template as mold waterlines are marked on the plug from the lines plan. Seeing how the laser spends so much time not flat or level, you could do worse than pick a glass calm day, sit in the cockpit of your boat till an observer says it looks level (or take a level with you) and get the observer to mark the waterline height (which would now be the LWL) in the middle of the transom and on the stem with a pen. Make sure the rig and all gear are on board. Then take it home, set it up plumb and level. Once you've done that you set up two parallel string lines (Level of course - use a waterlevel for fwd and aft leveling) on each side at the height of the marks you made and sight through those two lines a pen mark every 100mm or so onto the hull. Again, you'll need a helper. Alternately, hire laser level and do it that way. Yeah now I think of it, hire a laser level and avoid error. Easy easy :D . To check that it is correct, the distance between the transom and stem marks should be 12.5ft. Turn the boat upside-down, join up the marks with masking tape and you're there. Make sure there are no big swoops or s wandering through the tape.
