Warped hull reinforcement

I recently bought a 1992 14.2 keel version that is in rough shape and is my first boat. It’s been siting on its trailer in the sun and full of water for about a decade from what I can gather. The wooden stringers supporting the mast are trash now and I will replace those no problem. I pulled out the cubby and have been crawling through the hole to gain access to the inside of the hull. The wood supporting the center of the deck is in ok shape despite sitting in water for quite awhile.
The main problem I have had was several large dents in the hull from the custom trailer bunks. I put the boat on slings and was unable to push the dents out... until I noticed the large foam piece that is fiberglassed over on the bottom of the hull. I was able the push the dents out with the assistance of a heat gun after cutting loose the fiberglass over the foam.

the foam piece provides structural support for the bottom of the boat and I don’t want to get rid of it. However it is soaked with water still and warped pretty good. It extends almost the entire width of the boat so pulling it out is going to be very difficult if things go that way.

Any suggesting on salvaging the foam hull reinforcement?

I’ll post more pictures when I get them

Well I went ”in” and got my hands dirty. After getting it on the a frames and pulling the cubby out I was able to see the real damage to the boat. It had been sitting in a storage yard full of about 20 gallons of water for several years. Colorado winters haven‘t done it any favors.

Freeze thaw tore up a lot of the interior fiberglass and the heat from the summers had had serious dents in the hull. The inside of the hull has foot wide foam strips on the bottom that fiberglass is added over to stiffen the hull. This was all saturated with water so I cut it out entirely lesving just the bare hull. The dents were pushed out by hand after heating the area pretty lightly with a heat gun. A small dent here or there remains but nothing 4” deep anymore.

Where the foam insert were, I added another layer of fiberglass cloth and will fiberglass over some 1” x 1/2” wood strips to re-reinforce the hull. Additional wooden strips will be placed over the popped out dents.

The stringers supporting the deck were rotten and removed as well. I will add new ones and fiberglass them in place also.

So begins the journey of restoring my first boat haha. I’ll add pictures when it’s not 2 degrees outside

Pictures as promised. I finished putting most of the wooden reinforcements. This was the first time I have done any fiberglass work so I am glad nobody has to look at it. Next Ill be refitting the wooden stringers. some of the top layer of the boat has separated from the fiberglass, if anyone has any good ideas on how to fix that without cutting it out I would love to hear it.

I've decided that I am going to keep posting progress pics of this boat here so others will have a reference in the future. I'm going to name it either Frankenboat or Lemon.
