Varnish Stripper

It shouldn’t, but if I were to do mine again, I would invest in the heat gun and scraping method. That way you have somewhat less mess and are not having to do as much chemical disposal.
I think I saw a heat gun for around $25ish at my local Home Depot.

It can depend on how damaged the existing varnish is and/or if you need to do other repairs. When I did mine it was because there were dings going all the way into the wood that I wanted to repair.
Although you are right that if it is just minor wear that it is much easier to do the maintenance new coating.
