transom drain plug

Has anyone installed in their sunfish a drainplug in the transom? That way the water could be drained out without having to flip the hull over.

You'd still have to raise up the bow as the fish hull is bowed and the bottom of the transom is higher than the center of the hull and that's where the water collects.
For about the same amount of effort and a little more money you can put in a 6" port between the splash rail and dagger board trunk and have access to the low point of the hull to remove the water without any lifting, or turning and be sure of getting all the water out. Not to mention they make bags that hold on the port lip and give a nice secure storage space for small items on the water.

I'm about to install an inspection port as you sescribed (minus the storage compartment, where can I get that?), but how do you get the water out? With a sponge?

maciekdp,

A sponge is the way to remove any water. Idealy, you should not be getting any in the hull. Do a leak test (http://www.windline.net/index.html) to find your source of water and repair any/all leaks. The ports are made with and without lips for a "cat" (smaller) or "fat" (bigger) bag. You have to buy the correct port to use a bag. Beckson and Viking are 2 brands that make ports with bag lips. The bags and ports are seperate items, so you have to buy each.
