Tough Sailing at the Capri 14.2 Nationals (posted on behalf of Ed Jones)

When 19 boats headed out in San Diego's Mission Bay, the sailors expected the sea breeze to be brisk, but not 20 knots worth! That's what it peaked out at on the first day of racing. Averaging 15 knots, the four races were a real challenge, with three capsizes, one beaching, and several gear failures. Fortunately, the second day mellowed out considerably, with only 8-10 knots recorded.

We were greatly pleased by the turnout of seven couples who trailered their boats all the way from Phoenix. We knew that "Zonies" love San Diego because of our cool ocean breezes, but we were still pleasantly surprised by so many coming over. Thanks, guys, we hope you'll all come back next year.

Another big surprise was the close racing in Gold Fleet, with three boats tied for first place in the final standings. Using the tie-breaker rules our Principal Race Officer, Scott McKay, was able to sort out the winners, Scott Finkboner and Jennifer Lyons, who repeated last year's win. Silver Fleet was swept (five bullets!) by a junior fleet skipper, Christian Gerstoff, and his father, Peter.

Trophy winners were as follows: (Complete results can be found at the Mission Bay Yacht Club website, www.mbyc.org)
