Sunfish Regional Championship 2010 Florida

Here are some of Tom's photos cropped to zoom in on the action. Look for the Nov. 18 Waterline for one or more of these great shots.

So if somone tells Reid Hutchinson he hit the mark and he does the right thing and wihdraws from the race, he only falls from 3rd to 4th. BB

It looked to me that a couple of other boats hit the mark too. And, I must admit that I was rather aggravated that none bothered to acknowledge their infractions. This is - or supposed to be - a corinthian sport.

If someone sees an infraction on the course, and it's that important to them, they should protest it then or let it rest. Do not protest behind the anonymity of an online posting based on photos, videos or hearsay. Keep in on the course.

I don't think any of us are stupid enough to think we can protest based on watching a video, especially since we were not at the regatta! Also, I don't think the fellow sailors saw the cheating going on or based on my experience they would have said something. I only saw one cheater in the video. It is too bad he took the "I guess no one saw so I will keep going" approach. Fortunately we have the web and video to expose this sort of thing.

Video can be deceiving and is usually not allowed to be introduced at protest hearings. But to get back to the videos related to this regatta, I looked at them again to find evidence for your statement. I only saw two infractions (boats touching the windward mark), one in the day 1 video (sail 3760), and one in the day 2 video (sail number 6). It was noted by a witness that 3760 did take the required (one-turn) penalty (RRS 44.1).

Whoa... Settle down here guys and take a breath. We're just talking among friends here - no ax grinding going on.

A thought occurred to me how to help minimize(slightly) the aggravation caused by sailor/racers breaking rules (not doing penalty turns, etc...). I think it behooves race committee's to remind all of the standard rules of the road(penalty turns, etc,,) pre-race. Plant the seed in racers heads that the rules will be enforced, and that infractions will be gladly discussed at your friendly neighborhood protest committee. No need to go overboard, but a bit of a warning wouldn't hurt. Maybe this will help to cut down on folks blindly ignoring the rules on the course. I think the causal nature of our class can be taken too far if folks don't make a token effort to follow the rules. Starting line boat ramming, ignoring mark infractions, make it frustrating("pointless") for others who try to learn & follow the rules.
No one likes to be the bad guy by protesting an infraction, but an occasional "discussion" about the rules wouldn't hurt any of us. I know I could learn more about them. Is it two boat lengths, three boat lengths, what's a "reasonable" period of time to do the penalty turn, etc...?
