Rudder making questions

I got this picture off the specs page on the forum. What is the length of the edge that meets the transom and at what angle should it be? I don’t have a way to measure the angle of the hull so I can’t figure it out.

Since it will not be class legal, you can just wing it. Supposedly the boat sails better if the rudder sticks straight down, but if you are sailing in an area with weeds, the version above is the best since the weeds will slide off.

Does this photo help?

Kinda tough to measure the length due to the radii, but using 2 straight edges the rough length before is 7” about 5” after the radii are cut, or equal to the pintle length.

Hi CrimsonDawn. I built a new style rudder for my 71 Sunfish which had the old style rudder (you can search for the thread if you like). From the plans you show, I drew up the attached and added the angles I needed to actually build it. For me the missing number was 140 degrees, which gives the more or less correct sweep of 120 degrees. The diagram also shows where to measure the various radii from. I can measure the length where it meets the transom, but I don't think that will help you if this for the new style rudder hardware.

Hope this is of some help to you or others.

After a bike ride with the kids I measured the hull for ya....
10* + 120*= 130*

180* - 50*= 130*

I’d go with 130*

Psa: my math/carpentry skills are poor at best.

Thank you guys so much. Next question. I’m converting to the modern style gudgeon. How should it be positioned top to bottom?

If you have the new gudgeon, once you place it on the transom as high as possible, you’ll realize it’s actually pretty simple to visualize the position. The recess for the old style rudder gives you a nice reference to keep it centered.

I had thought Crimson Dawn was a Star Wars reference. I also thought it could represent hope for heavy weather — red sky in morning, sailors take warning.
