Rigging Modification

Any thoughts on modifying a recreational sail set up with a outhaul control, boom vang and cunningham? It appears as it might work by installing a few cam cleats along the boom.

I don't see why not. The race sail and recreational sail have the same luff, leech, and foot and are rigged on the same spars. All the race rig modifications found in the Scott Kyle's article on race rigging in The Sunfish Bible from the 1980s or the current Laser Performance owner's manual under "Pro" rigging [ http://www.laserperformance.com/main/images/stories/pdfs/Sunfish/SunfishRigging.pdf ] should setup exactly the same for the recreational sail as it does for the race sail.

You don't need to do add anything to tie a vang, unless you have something 'special' in mind.

Regarding the cleats, be sure to place them so that you don't cut your head on them when something 'unforeseen' happens .

There should be plenty of info on how to rig an outhaul, vang and cunningham through this forum. All you will need is two clam cleats to mount on the boom, the Sunfish Pro comes with these. The cunningham line runs along the boom from it's attachment point near the tack of the sail, so a cleat would be mounted near mid boom where you could reach it. The cleat for the outhaul would be located slightly aft of the cunningham cleat, and also should be easily reached. You would be pulling the cunningham line aft to tighten, for the outhaul line you would pull forward to tighten, so the cleats would be facong opposite directions.
