Refurbishing 1975 Sunfish

I am starting my refurbish of a 1975 Sunfish. I have the original Rudder/Tiller extension. I would like to use a universal tiller joint. Is it possible to attach one to existing wooden tiller? And what universal tiller joint is best to use if I can use my original set up? Thanks for any help. Sail Suz

I've attached a universal extension (an older design) made by Nicro.

It's adjustable for length and needs a ¼-inch hole (5.56 mm) through the tiller's tip (vertically).

Already indestructible, it will pop off should you fall on it--and pops right back on.

Ronstan makes one for $17.

If you haven't decided what length you need, you can DIY using a cut-off golf club, ski pole, or walking-stick handle.

I was pleased to see another sailor advocating Shoo-Goo. ("You can always use it to fix shoes").

Why buy a $100+ aluminum extension, when a space-age composite / graphite extension is available? ;)

I appreciate all your help and ideas! I’m sure I will have many more questions as I progress on resurrecting my old gal. Next, putting in an 5 “ access port behind V spray shield..Your best marine caulk for this and replacement of screws? This forum is the BEST! Sail Suz.

Just out of curiosity why the port? If there is nothing to fix in the hull, ports are not necessary unless you are installing a hiking strap.

Future Hiking strap, and I want access to dry interior of boat as needed, with fan, light bulb, winter storing dry out.

Like they say “ a Picture is worth a 1000 words” I am a Visual type person, so greatly appreciate you taking the time to pass this on. THX

Cause I like to be innovative and recycle ( aka resourceful, thrifty ) I’m going to try the golf club handle for the extension. Wish me Luck!
