Reefing

Has anyone had experience reefing the mainsail sailing in strong winds while using a boomkicker? Without one it is very hard for me, though removing a reef without a boomkicker is quite easy. Unfortunately, I don't always have the foresight to reef while at the dock when the wind is light, and if it changes later things can get spooky. Dick

I have. It reefs ok if you head upwind for a sec. Getting everything tied down is not much fun, but then it never is when the wind is whipping.

Thanks Kim. With the boomkicker that's what I wanted to hear. Without the kicker, one must really coordinate lowering the main while tightening the out-end of the jiffy reef; otherwise things get out of control if the out-end of the boom gets too low and sticks inside the cockpit. Dick

Yeah, the four things I did that made sailing better for me(on the c14) was roller furling, a boomkicker, reefing, and the small outboard. With this I feel can handle most situations. It removed most of the chaos :)
