Living up to its reputation, San Diego delivered a perfect racing weekend for the 20 Capri 14.2s and their crews as they gathered for the 21st annual Capri 14.2 National Regatta. The skies were clear, 70 degrees, with 7-9 knots of breeze on Saturday and 4-6 knots on Sunday. Five fleets were represented, Fleet 2 (San Diego), Fleet 5 (Los Angeles), Fleet 21 (Lake Mission Viejo), Fleet 22 (Mountain View), and Fleet 24 (Phoenix).

San Diego’s Scott Finkboner and Jennifer Lyons won the championship by sailing an almost-perfect regatta with four bullets and two seconds. Trophy winners were (total points in parens):

Gold Fleet Home Fleet

1 - Scott Finkboner/Jennifer Lyons (8) San Diego
2 - Susan Taylor/Werner (14) Los Angeles
3 - Brian Janney/Chris Wright (17) San Diego
4 - Mike Hester/Sarah Hester (27) Phoenix
5 - Evan Hoffmann/Brian Anderson (28) San Diego

Silver Fleet Home Fleet

1 - Cathie Jolley/Richard Hockaday (9) San Diego
2 - Randy Tiffany/Willi Hugelshofer (16) Lake Mission Viejo
3 - Fred Johnson/Jamie Hoffmann (17) San Diego

The Masters Trophy (skipper 55 or older) was won by Jim Ach and the Hard Luck Trophy was won by Randy Tiffany for managing to sail an entire race sans drain plug - without sinking and still winning 2nd place!

Our thanks go to our sponsors, Catalina Yachts, Quantum Sails and North Sails. We wish to especially thank Frank Butler, CEO of Catalina Yachts, who came to the dinner on Saturday night laden with a huge box of door prizes, including a week’s stay at his beach house in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Thanks, Frank!
