I'd just say paint the cockpit a color very close to what it currently is. If all the foot traffic on the bottom of the cockpit wears the paint thru it'll be less noticeable.
Topsides seems to brush on and level really well in a small area. I switched
from spaying the bottom of the hull to brushing on with the splash rail and
got real good results. I'm planning to do the same with my cockpit. Basically
any paint application is 90% surface preparation for good results. Disclaimer being
gel coat is much more of a permanent solution and Acrylic Enamels will have to
be redone some time in the future.
