Options rebuild rudder for 63 Sunfish

Have a 63 Sunfish where the brass bracket connecting the tiller (handle) to the rudder is bent and I wish to replace. I would like to avoid having to spend $436 for conversion kit. Will ordering and installing just the bracket from a current model Sunfish work? Any other ideas?

How about getting a piece of stainless steel bar stock about the same thickness and width as your old straps?
