Olympic Games Laser Sailing

NBC website says "Full live streaming of sailing - all 10 boats - will begin Sunday, July 29". They did the same thing in 2008, and it was quite watchable with decent video quality (for the internet). I think the only play-by-play was by text comment. The biggest problem was the races in China were running at 2 AM US time, slightly less of a problem with London.

Do you get BBC sport because they’re doing full coverage of it just thinking you might because we get some really sh*t US TV channels but that’s a rant for a different day.

It might be available on digital cable or satellite, but any Olympics coverage would probably be blacked out in the US. NBC pays beaucoup dinero for exclusive coverage here. And then proceeds to only show selective sports.

we do get BBC, (I agree we have some terrible channels here in the US including nbc) that would be great if we can watch it on BBC!

yea nbc has the rights, they're not covering any sailing whatsoever!

They are however covering the badmitton qualifying rounds, great job nbc!

ah you're right Tillerman!

It would be nice if they could just stream sailing live+repeat and also play it on tv in HD (even if its not live)...

Seems we are in luck here is Oz with 8 new dedicated Olympic channels. This is from the Fox website:-

Every nation's gold medals LIVE and in full
Watch on 8 new dedicated channels
Available in stunning High Definition
Foxtel will bring the glory of the London Olympic Games to life with eight brand-new, dedicated channels that will air in both High Definition and Standard Definition.
With around 1,100 hours of live events, and over 3,200 hours of total coverage, Foxtel will showcase all the drama, electricity, joy and despair of the Olympic Games as they’ve never been seen before on television.
The channels are*:
LONDON 1: Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo
LONDON 2: Cycling - Track, Cycling - BMX, Cycling - Mountain Bike, Cycling - Road
LONDON 3: Gymnastics - Artistic, Gymnastics - Rhythmic, Gymnastics - Trampoline
LONDON 4: Athletics - Track
LONDON 5: Athletics - Field
LONDON 6: Equestrian - Jumping, Equestrian - Eventing, Equestrian - Dressage, Fencing, Table Tennis
LONDON 7: Rowing, Canoeing - Sprint, Canoeing - Slalom
LONDON 8: Beach Volleyball, Sailing, Football, Hockey, Weightlifting
The remaining sports will be shown across a range of channels depending on the competition schedule.
For the first time ever, Foxtel subscribers will be able to see every single Gold Medal event live and in full. No matter what sport you love, or which country you barrack for, you will not miss the world’s best athletes as they vie for Olympic gold.
Over the 17 days of competition Foxtel will broadcast all sessions and matches of sport in full, with all major sports shown live. And with MyStar, you can record**, pause and rewind live TV so they see all the action at a time that suits you.
Foxtel's ground-breaking coverage of the LONDON 2012 Olympic Games will go live on July 25 AST to include live coverage of the 14 football matches that precede the Opening Ceremony. Competition will commence on air at 6.00pm on Saturday, July 28 (AEST).
* Some sports listed may appear across different channels as determined by the competition schedule. May not be available in some building types. **Remote record available from July 21.

Typically, we see maybe a 5 minutes highlight package each night at some stage (wich they don't announce) of the sailing on the free to air, even if it's the gold medal race where we have already bagged a medal. The TV stations prefer to show repeats of the swimming heats a dozen times and the finals 2 dozen times.

The number of people subscribing to pay TV is quite small.

Well shoot. It was actually more convenient for me to watch the streaming video in China than in London. Looks like all the races are going to start at 7 AM. I guess I WILL have to watch it at work.

Does anyone know if they will have live coverage of all events, or just one event each day? I think the past, they have concentrated the coverage on only one course at a time.

So why did they drop windsurfing from the Olympics in 2016 again? They say they needed an exciting spectator sports?

Sorry to keep bumping this, but I'm kind of excited about watching some of the racing.

It doesn't appear that NBC is going to let just anyone watch the streaming video. You need to be a subscriber to a cable or satellite service which provides CNBC and MSNBC. I actually had to go through Time-Warner (my provider) to set up an account and password.

If you don't have cable or satellite, you may be SOL. I suppose there may be feed from the BBC or another country you could try to access, but I bet they block it.

Yes they block it. "nbcolymipcs" got the main-TV-rights of the keyholder "OBS", for USA. OBS is the "Olympic Broadcast Service" ( http://obs.es/obslondon2012.html ) that keeps the several official video live-streams of the olympic areas, also of Weymouth. We, at GER, get all of Olympic live-streams (in LQ and HQ) by our public TV Stations ARD and ZDF (in daily change), like NBC. BUT, like at the games of 2008 at China, it hasn't been possible (for me, as a common internet user and not IT specialist) to download and save those video live streams on a HD on my PC. I verify your informations about the access to NBC. At 2008 the Bejing Games it only was a need, to hide the own IP address into an US IP adress and take a useful US post code plus US cable-provider and one was able to view the live-streams at NBC (but it was not possible, to copy the live-streams on a HD...). For all non US-Americans (like me): Try to find out at your national TV, if they got rights for your country, to probably "transmit" via air, cable, satellite or web. The OBS-rights usually do not include to copy the video live streams onto a HD. One has to be an IT expert in copying live streams onto a HD. F.e.:One need the actual URL of the just transmitted live stream, but for me, I was't able, till now, to locate such an URL's at GER. Software like "Flashget" doesn't work without those live-stream-URL's. Any ideas? In the moment, I am only able to (legal) copy the digital air TV broadcast signal of my country onto my PC for my own use. But at the time, over the next week, they probabaly broadcast "live sailing" (from lunchtime to afternoon) I have to work! At our country ARD and ZDF told, it is possible to aft-view, on demand, the live streams at their internet galleries, but I have absolute no idea, how to copy those video reviews to my PC HD (as they block it to do so). Not even the standard-"realplayer"-downloader (freeware) work for this...
To the opposite: At GER the laws permit to take a (exact one) copy for privat use. Again: any useful ideas are apreciated. Thanks!

In order to be seen in prime time will need to have female competitors wearing impossibly small swim suits sailing ....... competing with synchronized diving ..... beach volleyball .....

No need to be SOL.... Follow the advice here : http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?showtopic=137356&st=50 about downloading and installing Expat Shield (if you are not in the UK) and then watch the BBC feeds. There are other feeds avail, I've only had time to watch the BBC feed and it seemed good enough for me...

I have been unable to do any work at all since it all started....bbc have streamed 5 hours of live sailing each day...I gotta take a break tomorrow.

Note you can watch recorded video of previous races (at least on the NBC site). That means you can do your job, then go home at watch it in the evening. And not read any forums where people may give away what happened during the races.

Got to avoid the news websites, too. You just know CNN and Drudge are going to put links to the sailing results at the top of their pages.

You huys should come visit the UK, we have something like 12 HD free to air channels showing every minute of the olympics live.

I guess being host country has it's advantages!

You can also stream in HD (if your internet connection can handle it).

What a mess. All the countries seem to be blocking other countries from their feeds. And in the US, NBC makes you prove you are a cable subscriber to look at a feed that isn't available on cable! Crazy. Doesn't anyone care that this is an international event and we all want to watch exactly the same races anyway? Let's hope that the Olympics award the internet rights to Google next time around and everyone around the world can watch live coverage together.

Thanks"49208"!
Yeesterday it was late, I was already to tired to test. But today, just a few minutes ago, I was able to use "Expat". Okay, it already has been to late here to follow sailing live video streamings at the related bbc internet channel at bbc sports. There they already transmitted females field hockey... But, successful I was able to install and set the Expat Shield correct into a UK IP and was able to use the bbc-"iPlayer".:)
Also: A click to the right mouse button into the video-picture has given me the info, it is possible to download the live-stream (if one use f.e. the extended "professional real player" (it's the not cost free version)).

I guess, if I (definitely not an IT-expert) was able to follw your simple advise, at other continents the others are able to do it, too.

But, like "torrid", at the PC in my office I can't install anything and when I'm back home from work, it's to late already for sailing live video streams. My hope is: sooner or later this year, at Youtube etc., one is able to view some of the video streams of the actual Olympic sailings (this was the case in 2008, for the Quingdao Olympic sailing competitions).

However, it seems, at sailing, like at several other disciplines the GER's, lose. Aft now 3 to 4 races, it seems to me, the GER participants already missed to catch the train for a medal at the 49er, Laser Standard fleet and the Laser Radial fleet... There is some small hope for the GER's at the Star fleet (probalby bronce, but not gold or silver) and probably at windsurfing.

Are they only providing coverage of selected classes? I skipped through the recorded video of yesterday's racing and found no Lasers.

We're in the US and got the Expat Shield working and watched the sailing live this morning. Awesome footage. We watched Slingsby go from deep in the 20s to 6th in the 4th race. Love it!!
