Newbie after age 50

How practical is it for someone who is fairly fit to try to learn how to sail the Laser with the goal of being a mid pack racer? Current age 57, male, weight 170lbs.

Thanks, I appreciate your comments.

Hi Mike,

If you have some racing experience, it's certainly doable. The Laser class has a pretty good Masters (age 35 and over, broken down by 10 year splits) schedule. Your age puts you in the Grand Master catagory.

Your weight sounds fine for the full rig in most conditions, if it's blowing over 15 knots, you might consider the Radial rig as an alternative (there are a number of Grand Masters that switch back and forth, regatta to regatta).

While the top "kids" sail the boat extremely athletically, the majority are weekend warriors that are still able to get the boat around the course without difficulty.

Find a good fleet to join, where people willing share knowledge and you'll be on your way.
