What does everyone listen to? I am sure the taste of Laser sailors is quite varied.....

Top 3 bands now

The Empty
Coheed & Cambria

Well....your'e right, varied it is.

As a composer, I have been exposed to a huge amount of material. I compose now, mainly for independant film, and draw from almost every style around.

My own background as a trombonist had me 'digging' Earth wind and fire and Chicago ( in the '70's ), and later on a lot of latin jazz and salsa, as that started to catch on in Canada, where I'm from, in the late '80's.. I am putting together several albums of my own now under my Ocean Groove Records label...Smooth Jazz..I suppose is the best general description..I'll be playing Flugelhorn on most of the tracks.....

I'm not too current with the bands of today ( I'm only 46 ) but I have always listened to mainly instrumental music. Believe it or not, I am actually enjoying the stuff I never really liked in high school in the mid '70's...all the rock stuff..I like it!!! It was all about jazz back then....

Hope that starts more contributions to your thread!!!

From the early days of racing in the 70ties I learnt, that a good psychological trick to be fit for the ride in the waves (and the race in general) to listen some suitable music, while preparing the boat before launching.

This sailing-season that just ended here, my favorite CD was (and still is of course) "Confidence" from "Gentleman". :)

This X-mas, I like to listen to the X-mas-CD of the German-singers "die Prinzen" (have grown up at the very famous Christian-chous of the City of Leipzig "Thomaner Chor"). This CD is called "Festplatte".

Cheers

Well MasterMike, as a good and often guest at Stuttgart, I’m indeed a great fan of Salsa-Music (and the Brazilian Caipirinha-Drink...but that’s another story...). Stuttgart is not only the “labor room” for all the Porsche’s and Mercedes’, its something like the German-capital of South-American music (Merrily and the Boathouse Scot can agree that, I guess, from my photos).
Salsa is the music I hear when I full-push the gas-pedal, drive on the left lane, speed 73 mph, at the German-Autobahn to the lakes with my old white Ford-Escort-Diesel, the magnolia-colored GER46438 car-toped and friendly motion one hand to the carefully+nervous on the right lane driving new Porsche-Cayenne’s with their new Byte-Dinghy on the new Harbeck-Trailer in the back that I pass over....;-)

“Latin House Vol. 7” has been my favorite Salsa(-House)CD in this year. Here you find it online:

Kuba?
Yes of course, they sail Laser there, also on professional level, I guess.
My favorite Cuban-CD is called “Los Titanos” (sorry, the musicians come from the Netherlands) and you find some information about the musicians here:

http://www.speelman.nl/ensemble/LosTitanos/

At that website, klick to the little black speaker (near “musicfragmenten”) and can take the title “Los Titanos02” to hear some sounds of them :)

Another famous CD and movie is the “Buena vista Social Club”. Great sounds and culture, pure, from Cuba.

Aft a day of good sailing the Laser in good waves and breezes, a good “Cuba-Libre”drink and a nice Cohiba-Cigar (perhaps produced by the famous Robaneiro-cigar-farm at Cuba / http://www.havanajournal.com/cigar.php ), listening to “LosTitanos”-music at a warm-summer-sunset at the beach.... can be life easier?.

Cheers & Buenos notches...

Whenever I listedn to music before sailing I just didn't know what is was going to do.

1) get me all pumped up to sail well

2) distract me, get me humming some tune in my head and sail slow

--------
Big race, a little rock music as above seems to get me amped

This dutch guys I have seen live in Stutgart this year and I confound from the name that both groups often in my soft brain since then...

Los Tintanes is the Salsa-music style I like to hear in the car.

Yes, if the music is to loud, I agree. But I do not want to entertain the whole launching area with my music. So, I listen to my music - with low volume.
That do not pump me up to much, but in my "sub-brain", I switch down a bit to concentrate for the sailing-strategy/tacktics inside, while listening and doing the rigging-job.
The real preparing for me is on the water, of course. I do not take a (waterproved) mp3-player with me. On the water the concentration has to be to the sailing 130%.
Ciao

Hard core rap gets me pumped up for basketball, but music doesnt do anything for me for sailing. :)
Let's Go by Trick Daddy gets me really pumped.

Thanks, Lu...good references. I listen to the BVSC often, and the film is always inspiring. The joy of music.

Masters Worlds in Cuba anyone?!

Wow, we have a little bit of everything here, but I think you are our first composer.

I like to listen to just about everything except country, and some of that Jazz is, well, too jazzy for me. When my older son left home for school, he took his music collection with him, Industrial, tech, gothic. I like some of that sometimes. I drove cross country with him a few years ago when he moved and the Tiger Lilies saved the day. Rock I listen to all the time as a default. It's my husband's music. I also like music that blends cultures.

1)Live (The best of). On the way to the club.
2)Stained. While setting up.
3)Godsmack. While sailing.

Silent reflection on the way home after. ;)

Does anyone know a good sailing song? I only know REALLY cheesy ones.

Depends on what you consider cheesy, but Jimmy Buffett is the tried and true standby, CSN&Y with Southern Cross, Bob Seeger/Aginst the Wind, Artist?/Cool Change, Christopher Cross had a couple/these you would probably consider cheesy, but I liked them. I'm sure there are others...

Another is STYX/Come Sail Away. I also heard a country song yesterday on the radio called Redneck Yacht Club. It was pretty funny. Don't know who sings it.

Lyle Lovett does a great version of Me Upon my Pony on my Boat.

Craig Morgan sings Redneck Yacht Club. Definately a good song for any sailor or boater.

My top two bands would be;
Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphy's if your not familier with them check it out, who knows you may get hooked like me.

Oh my gosh .... I can't beleive no one mentioned Metallica!!!!! Fits right in with laser sailing, particularly in the columbia river gorge.
