Motor mount

First time visitor to this forum. Looks great. I just got a '95 14.2. Has anyone ever attached a motor directly to the transom with a c clamp style bracket. Is that a ridiculous thing that might damage the transom. Alternately putting a board under either end of the clamp to add support. Thanks in advance .. Dennis

KingofCary,

A lot of us have discussed this issue, you should check out this very long thread of discussion: http://www.capri14.org/forum/showthread.php?t=512

You CAN clamp the outboard onto the transom, but I think you will discover that it gets in the way of the the traveller, blocks, and rigging.

Most of us bolt a motor mount onto the transom and then clamp the motor onto the mount. This allows the outboard to rest 8-10 inches behind the boat, so that it avoids getting caught in the rigging. Garlelick makes a good inexpensive stationary motor mount that you can try. I also believe that you might be able to order one from http://www.catalinadirect.com.

My very old 14.2 had a hollow transom so it needed reinforcement, I think this a unique circumstance. A capri technician told me that the vast majority of 14.2s already come with reinforcement on one side of the transom, so the extra support is not necessary.

If you do decide to keep the motor clamped on, you might want to do something to protect the transom from scratches that will occur from the c-clamps.

Oh yes, and be careful not to chew up your tiller with the prop!

Good luck!
Chris
